Updated: Aug 2, 2021

In this new article, we've decided to revisit the most beautiful short and tea length wedding dresses worn by past and present icons on their big days...

Indeed, for some, the traditional dress just doesn't fit.

From Yoko Ono to Zoë Kravitz, there are famous brides who are notorious rebels, providing inspiration for a more subversive version of bridal fashion than the classics we all know. And while they've always been around, with the likes of Brigitte Bardot and Audrey Hepburn leading the way in short dresses since the 1960s, we're expecting a big boom in tea length and short wedding dresses with many brides looking for a more stylish, modern, comfortable and original option.

Whether you're about to say 'I do', have already done so, or don't plan to do so in the near future, these gorgeous short dresses are worth a look.

1. Brigitte Bardot

In 1957, for her wedding to actor Jacques Charrier (left), BB chose a remarkably simple pink gingham dress by designer Jackques Esterel. In 1966, Brigitte Bardot married German industrialist and playboy Gunter Sachs and wore a plain summer mini dress for her Las Vegas wedding. 1960s fashion was all about liberation, and this casual barefoot look shocked everyone...

2. Jane Birkin

On 16 October 1965, a young London actress married composer John Barry in the Chelsea district. Jane Birkin, 18 years old and still unknown in France, already had her own style. Sublimated in a non-traditional wedding dress, short, with half-length sleeves and, above all, completely made of suggestive crochet, the young bride exuded innocence.

3. Audrey Hepburn

When Audrey Hepburn married American actor and director Mel Ferrer in 1954 (left), she chose a design that’s become one of the most famous and inspired wedding dresses of all time. The tea-length, fit and flare dress with ballgown sleeves, a high neck collar and elbow-length gloves was designed by Pierre Balmain. Audrey married her second husband, Italian psychiatrist Andrea Dotti, in 1969. The actress turned to Hubert de Givenchy to create a demure, pared-down gown for the occasion.

4. Yoko Ono

Could this dress be more '70s? Yoko Ono married Beatles frontman John Lennon in a 1969 Gibraltar ceremony. Her short dress was ultra mod, not to mention pretty casual considering her celebrity status. (Please note that Yoko paired the outfit with a felt hat, sneakers and tube socks, like a boss.)

5. Mia Farrow

Frank Sinatra and Mia Farrow tied-the-knot in 1966, and Mia looked amazing. The 21-year-old star wore a simple, double-breasted skirt suit to the ceremony, which took place in Las Vegas. Fun fact: she cut her hair into that signature pixie shortly before their big day.

6. Cindy Crawford

'90s calling! Cindy Crawford wore a short John Galliano slip dress for her wedding to Rande Gerber.

7. Beth Dito

Beth Ditto married Kristen Ogata in a romantic ceremony held in Maui, Hawaii. The Gossip singer wore a gorgeous Jean Paul Gaultier prom style dress with a plunging neckline and walked down the aisle barefoot. How cool is that!?

8. Nathalie Portman

Natalie Portman's wedding to Benjamin Millepied was a super private affair, but paparazzi caught her wearing an A-line tea-length wedding dress by Rodarte. The dress had a lovely sheer overlay and long sleeves, and Natalie paired it with simple flats.

9. Nancy Shevel

Paul McCartney married Nancy Shevell in 2011, and she wore an ultra-chic dress by — who else? — Stella McCartney, of course!

10. Keira Knightley

Keira Knightley opted for a pale pink tulle Chanel dress for her wedding to James Righton in the South of France. She paired it with a Chanel boucle jacket and blush flat shoes. So chic!

11. Olivia Palermo

Olivia Palermo opted for a three-piece Carolina Herrera ensemble, consisting of a cashmere long-sleeve top, shorts and a tulle overlay.

12. Charlotte Casiraghi

Charlotte Casiraghi surprised royal watchers at her civil ceremony to Dimitri Rassam in June 2019 by shunning a long wedding dress in favour of a Saint Laurent mini dress. The royal bride proved her style credentials in the brocade dress, designed by Anthony Vaccarello, which featured three bows down the front and a scalloped hemline.

13. Lili Allen

Lily Allen and her partner, David Harbour, revealed that they had skipped the big public circus and got hitched in Vegas in 2020 with no one around except for Allen’s two daughters and the Elvis impersonator who officiated the ceremony. The bride wore a mini off-shoulder Chanel dress and the reception was held at In-N-Out burger.

14. Zoë Kravitz

The actress is never one to follow the rules of fashion, and so it’s no wonder she chose an ankle-skimming ballerina cut dress, designed by Alexander Wang for her Parisian wedding to Karl Glusman in 2019.

15. Gwen Stefani

Last but not least, pop star Gwen Stefani tied the knot just a few weeks ago during an intimate wedding ceremony at Shelton’s Oklahoma ranch. After the ceremony the bride’s wedding gown was transformed into a "party dress". The bride swopped the long skirt for a funky shorter skirt, showing off her toned legs in fishnet stockings and sky-high stiletto cowboy boots designed by Le Silla.
